PHOTOS: Freedom High School PTSA Raises Funds on the Golf Course
Sixth Annual Freedom High School PTSA Golf Tournament in South Riding.
It was a bright and sunny day, and then a dark and stormy day, and then a bright and sunny day again last Saturday when the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) hosted their at the .
Golfers included parents, teachers, administrators, local business owners and other fun-loving charitable community members. The tournament began with a βshot-gun startβ early in the afternoon, and the event wrapped up with dinner and an awards ceremony that evening.
Tournament Chairman Paul Denfeld said, βOur goal each year is simple:Β Produce a first-class, enjoyable golf tournament for players of all skill levels followed by a delicious dinner, tournament prizes and a raffle to give away exciting gifts while providing our sponsors with a beneficial and worthwhile experience so as to encourage their participation year after year."

"We have been blessed by the fact that so many of our sponsors and golfers return each year, a testament to our tournament-organizing committee, our goal and the worthiness of the cause!β
This annual golf tournament accounts for 60-70 percent of the budget for the Freedom High School PTSA. With these funds, the PTSA has been able to fund or assist various programs, curriculum enhancement and initiatives such as National Honor Society, academic letters, reading programs, scholarships for graduating seniors, TALONS Saturday tutoring program, Arts in Education, Earth Sciences curriculum, Art Department, Biology Department, Choir, Drama, All Night Grad Celebration (ANGC), Junior-Senior Proms, DECA and numerous club activities - many of which benefit the South Riding community.

βWhat strikes me most,β reflected Denfeld βis what this funding enables the PTSA to do for our kids at Freedom.Β I graduated from Annandale High School in 1978 and many of the things that I took for granted as a high school student simply would not be available to our students today were it not for the efforts of the PTSA and, in particular, the companies and individuals who care enough to get involved in this annual golf tournament.βΒ
Team Miller won the tournament with the low score of 58; while one team of Freedom High School teachers, Team Smidt, won Moeβs burritos for a year with the highest team score of 117. Laura Smidt proudly joked, βThis is our lowest score yet! Weβve really improved since last year.β Smidt noted thatΒ her team golfs once each year β at this PTSA tournament.
Β Taking 2nd place was Team Carnes, and coming in 3rd place was Team Moffet. For the 6th year in a row, no one made the much desired $25,000 hole-in-one shot.
