Reaching the Homeless in Chantilly
The homeless find a home at New Hope Fellowship.
"They need help and support," Jim Putzlocker, Advisory Team Member of New Hope Fellowship, said of the homeless.
Led by Pastor Pat Deevers, New Hope Fellowship meets at the Greenbriar Community Center in Chantilly. Its mission is to serve the homeless in the area and spread awarness to the community.
Jim Putzlocker said that every Sunday, members of the church pick up homeless people from different locations in the area, such as the Lamb Center and the Embry Rucker Community Shelter. They are then fed breakfast, lunch and dinner and offered clothing and cash that has been donated.
The Chick-fil-A in Chantilly donates food once a month for 50-70 people. The owner/operator, Peter Kim "admires their work to serve the homeless community in Fairfax and wanted to help support them," said Rebekah Knable, a representative of Chick-fil-A at Chantilly Place.
According to Fairfax County, there are more than 1,700 homeless women, men and children in the Fairfax County/Falls Church area. A majority of the homeless are children and working families. Low incomes and lack of affordable housing is the main cause of homelessness in the area, according to the Fairfax County website.
Community members can help fight homelessness in the immediate future by serving food and donating clothing. As for a long-term solution, Putzlocker said that many homeless men and women that he works with need jobs that provide a sense of responsibilty.
There are local government programs in place such as the Hypothermia Prevention Program, as well as a community plan to prevent and end homelessness.
However, Putzlocker belives that homelessness intiatives would be more effective "if the government let faith-based organizations run programs."
Editor's Note: A previous version of this article included locations of homeless campsites. Those locations have been removed.

Thank you so much for coming to visit us and taking the time, talent, and resources, to publish this article. Our New Hope congregation is filled with precious people. I'm so glad that the larger community will have an opportunity to see how we love on each other and help each other. We are blessed by many loving, compassionate, and generous people in our area who keep us going and greatly appreciate everyone who donates. Again, my thanks. Pastor Pat Deavers

Jim Putzlocker is a good and decent person who does much to help the community and those less fortunate than many of us.

Pastor Pat,
You wont believe this but I am James Meadows do you remember me???? This is a great thing you are doing here. I to have turned my life over to the LORD. I now live in the Gulf of Mexico (Alabama) I wished every body would come together but the devil is still alive and kicking. It really doesnt get cold here but when it does it makes me remember how blessed me and my family are and that there are many out there that do not have the luxury's that we do. Any way GOD bless you and the people who you touch through your obedience.

Of course I remember you James. At my age and stage I often remember people from 30 years ago better than ones I met this morning. LOL Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I'm so glad to hear from you and pray our Lord continues to bless your ministry in the Gulf.
