It's a big day for Steelers and Packers fans across the country, and for some people, it's all about the food. About 15 years ago, my dad's aunt, Edie, published a cookbook called Cooking by "E" that is full of her best recipes. Today's dish comes from that cookbook, and if anybody knows about seafood, it's the women in my dad's family. Here's what you need: 10 oz. crabmeat 8 oz. softened cream cheese 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 cup mayonnaise 2/3 cup slivered almonds (optional) Paprika (optional) 2 Mini-baguettes Here's what you do: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix…
I don't think I need to tell anybody that the Steelers are playing in the AFC Championship today. I respect the Jets so I'm expecting a good game, but I still want the "W" for Pittsburgh. Today I made something that my brother-in-law calls Football Dip. My sister used to make this for Virginia Tech games (booo) during a time that she refers to as BK (before kids). Here's what you need: 1 c Mexican cheese 1 small can black olives 2-8 oz. packages of cream cheese (softened) 16 oz. sour cream 1 packet taco seasoning 1 jar sliced jalapenos Here's what you do: Combine the sour cream, cream …
A playoff game between the Steelers and the Ravens deserves more than just finger food. Much more. I was first introduced to wine burgers while living in Brooklyn last summer. I'm usually not a burger girl, but a diner a couple blocks away from my apartment hooked me. For this recipe, you can use beef, turkey, or any other kind of burger meat. I just happened to have elk in my freezer and wanted to use it. I'm using a skillet to cook the burgers, but you can use a grill if you'd like. I'm also serving the sliders Pittsburgh-style with fries on top. This is also optional, but I like …
The Steelers earned a bye this week, so I felt the need to take a bye, too. The Falls Church Patch Editor, Andre, was kind enough to share this recipe that he published for his column, Andre Taylor's Tasty Tidbits. I haven't tried it, but it looks really good, and I trust Andre's judgement. Here's what you need: 4 pounds of peeled jumbo prawns 3 eggs 1 cup of flour 1 cup of corn meal 3 tablespoons of season salt 2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper 2 tablespoons of hot sauce Here's what you do: The first thing you want to do is make sure you have a big pot to heat your oil in. I personally …
My sister shared this recipe with me after making it for her Christmas Eve brunch. Don't let the name fool you, though. The dish is hearty and satisfying; it's not just a dainty appetizer. Holiday meatballs are perfect to serve for lunch while watching the Steelers defeat the Browns at 1 p.m. Here is what you need: 2 15oz. bottles of hot ketchup 2 cups Blackberry wine (available at Wegmans) 2-12 oz. jars of apple jelly 2 lbs. frozen pre-cooked meatballs A slow cooker (known to most as a Crock-Pot) Here is what you do: Add first three ingredients to the slow cooker and cook on high …
The Steelers play tonight so I decided to run the column a few days early. Also, considering Christmas is in two days, I got a little festive with today's recipe. In true holiday-spirit, my two sisters taught me how to make these delicious concoctions last night…I have no idea where the recipe came from, or if there even is one. Here is what you need: 1 Large bag of small pretzels 2 or 3 bags of Hershey's Kisses (the Hugs taste the best) 1 Large bag of M&Ms Here is what you do: Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Lay pretzels out on a baking sheet and top each one with a Kiss. Put the trays …
For today's game, I made a variation on a cheese ball recipe that my grandma has been making for years. Normally, this is made as a ball with a thicker consistency, but I used whipped cream cheese to give it a thinner consistency. This is what you need: 10 oz. tuna 8 oz. whipped cream cheese 2 T soy sauce 2 T chopped onions 1 Small bag of chopped walnuts This is what you do: Combine the first four ingredients in a large bowl and refrigerate overnight. Fill a serving dish with alternating layers of the cheese mixture and walnuts. Serve the dish with crackers. I like to use Nature's …
Today I'll be watching the Steelers take on the Bengals while eating my world-famous turkey wraps. I made a variation on a recipe for cream cheese rolls that my brother-in-law's mom makes as an appetizer. This is what you need: 1 Package flour tortillas 2 Packages softened cream cheese 1 Onion, finely chopped 1 Package Hidden Valley Ranch mix 1 Can olives, finely chopped 2 T Jalepenos, chopped 2 Cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1/2 Pound Sliced deli Turkey 1 Head romaine lettuce This is what you do: Mix the first seven ingredients together in a large bowl. Spread a layer of the mixture …
In a perfect world, we would all be spending our Sunday tailgating in the sunshine with a massive spread of homemade food prepared by someone's grandmother. The beer would ice-cold, and the liquor would be top-shelf. There would also be a pot of hot apple cider warming on the portable stove for when it starts to get chilly. Unfortunately, most of us will be watching the game in our sweats, on the couch. So, I'll be posting a recipe for game-day food every Sunday for you to inhale while cheering on your teams. Today, I made a variation on a 7-layer Tex-Mex dip that was passed on to my …
