Greenbriar McDonald's Demolished for Rebuilding

The McDonald's at Greenbriar Shopping Center was demolished Saturday morning, making way for a new McDonald's restaurant, which is expected to open some time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Franchise owner Jim Van Valkenburg, on hand with family and friends, was given the honor of starting the demolition of his building. The Greenbriar McDonald's was built in 1977, and was the first franchise location in the country to be built with a drive-thru at the time of construction. Other locations had drive-thrus added to existing buildings before Greenbriar was constructed.

Jim Van Valkenburg has owned and operated the franchise since 1983. The new McDonald's will be built on the same site, but will be moved to the center of the lot to create more parking space and a better customer experience.

"Everything is going except the flag pole," said Van Valkenburg. The flag pole is considered a landmark for the Greenbriar Shopping Center and must be retained as part of the rebuilding agreement.
