Chantilly's New Walmart: Good or Bad?

The new Walmart held its grand opening on Wednesday, March 14.

The country's largest employer recently opened its doors in Chantilly after taking over part of the . The new offers groceries, a bakery, a deli, a Subway and a pharmacy.

After a slew of bad press and lawsuits, the company has recently incorporated changes to its new stores in the hopes of improving the customer experience and its image.

“The layout of the store is easy to navigate, which will save our customers time as they shop for everyday necessities,” said Frank Durst, store manager. “By grouping the products that our customers most often purchase, including health and beauty and pet supplies, we are making one-stop shopping even easier.”

Several years ago, CNBC ran an investigative series on Walmart that included this video about a small town in New York with residents that were both for and against a new Walmart coming to town. 

Even though Chantilly is not in economic ruin, the video still brings up valid points about the pros and cons of a new Walmart. While it brought 300 new jobs to the area, local businesses might also be run out of business. On the other hand, surrounding businesses such as and might see a boost in customers due to increased traffic in the area.
