On March 29, 2014 was the annual Fairfax County 4-H Contest Day at the Fairfax County Government Center. Seventeen people participated in this amazing event. There were many
categories including public speaking, extemporaneous speech, presentations with
a PowerPoint, presentations without a PowerPoint, and fashion revue.

Public speaking was a category were the contestants chose a
topic by their self and present about it. The participants could not use any
props, just use your words and expressions. The contestants who participated in
this category had amazing projects.

There was also extemporaneous speech. For this category the
contestants picked three topics out of a bag and they had a certain amount of
time to prepare about it.  Kids age eight
through thirteen got thirty minutes and kids age fourteen through nineteen got fifteen
minutes to prepare. They had to have a one to three minute speech about the
topic you picked. This was a challenging
category that you had to think fast for.

Two other categories were presentations with a PowerPoint and
presentations without a PowerPoint. In
these categories the contestants got to show off their skills with props and
computers. Many people had great demonstrations and projects in this category. Almost
everybody participated in this great category.

The final category that you could participate in was fashion
revue. In this category the contestants got to show of what they had sewn in
front of everybody during the closing ceremony. The pieces they put together
were fantastic. Everyone’s projects were wonderful and looked great.

The contestants got judged on their appearance, voice, poise,
and grammar. They also got scored on their introduction, verbal presentation,
method, teaching aids, organization, audience view, and summary. The
information they presented had to be accurate, up-to-date, complete, and that
it was appropriate for the experience.

At the end of the day everyone had fun, learned something
new, received ribbons, and got detailed feedback from the judges telling them
what to work on. This was an amazing learning experience for everyone.
