GymStars End Their Season with Medalists and Another State All-Around Champion

The Chantilly Academy GymStars close our their season with medalists at the State and National level and another State All-Around Champion.

Over the past few weekends, the Chantilly Academy Gymnastics GymStars competed in four different meets, bringing their outstanding 2012-2013 season to a close.  During the weekend of April 27th and 28th, the Level 5 GymStars competed in their State Championship Meet at the Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, VA.  Over 450 gymnasts from across the state competed.  Level 5 GymStar Catherine Bare of Oak Hill placed 3rd on vault, 3rd on floor exercise and 6th All Around in the 9-Jr-3 group.  Katarina Selewski of Centreville placed 6th on floor, 7th on bars, beam and All Around in the 9-Sr-1 group.  Samantha Bowers of Clifton came in 6th on floor and Shannon Sweeney of Fairfax came in 6th on vault and bars in the 9-Jr-1 group.  Kelly Fangyen of South Riding came in 5th on gloor and 7th on beam in the 9-Jr-2 group.  Caitlin Dixon of Oak Hill came in 5th on floor and 6th on bars in the 10-Sr-2 group, and Sofia Thompson of Waterford tied for 6th on vault in the 10-Sr-3 group.  Other Level 5 State qualifiers were Megan Baker, Megan Berg and Brooke Stefanish all of Centreville; Karissa Bhatti of Bristow; Lilliana Fe Gines, and Riley Waldrop of South Riding; Leah Mozeleski of Chantilly; Neve Perez of Leesburg and Allison Silas of  Fairfax.

Competing on April 28th, Level 8 GymStar Kelly Jackson of Oakton represented the GymStars and the state of Virginia at the Region 7 Level 8 Championship in Landover, MD. Approximately 285 gymnasts from a six-state region competed over two days.  Jackson attained her highest score on floor exercise for the season at the meet!

During the weekend of May 4th and 5th, Level 9 GymStar Alexa Giovanis of Sterling competed at the Level 9 Eastern National Championship in Battle Creek, MI.  Approximately 380 athletes, representing the top Level 9 gymnasts in the eastern half of the United States, competed over three days.  Giovanis finished 2nd on vault in the Senior 8 group, representing the GymStars with pride and closing out her Junior Olympics gymnastics career on an excellent note!

The Virginia USA Gymnastics Level 4 State Championship Meet was also held the weekend of May 4th and 5th at Averett University in Danvile, VA, where approximately 560 gymnasts competed.  The Chantilly Academy GymStars had seven top three finishes, including an All-Around State Champion!  Level 4 GymStar Madeline Williams of Centreville was the State Champion on vault, uneven bars, beam and All-Around, and took 3rd place on floor exercise in the 7-Jr-2 group.  Katie O’Brien of Herndon tied for 2nd on vault in the 7-Sr group and Katie Vaughan of Oakton placed 3rd on uneven bars in the 7-Sr group.  Other Level 4 State qualifiers include Kiersten Bell of Fairfax; Delilah Borg and Camden Hovell of South Riding; Elise Jeffries of Oak Hill; Shay Keuhner of Stone Ridge; Julia Lamy and Ashlyn Ortiona of Herndon; Lauren Poythress of Clifton; and Audrey Raisbeck and Amanda Stalfort of Centreville.

The GymStars will celebrate their accomplishments at their end of the year banquet and have started training for the next season.  Join the GymStars and cheer them on in September during their 4th Annual Cartwheel-a-thon, when they raise money for Children’s Miracle Network and their next season’s travel.
