Cold Front, Hurricane to Bring Storms to Northern Virginia

Thursday will bring severe storms to the area before Hurricane Irene swings by.

Hurricane Irene is headed for the East Coast and is likely to hit the Carolinas, portions of the Mid-Atlantic and New England, but Northern Virginia will see some severe thunderstorms even before the storm gets close.

On Thursday severe thunderstorms will be moving through the area due to a cold front, according to the National Weather Service, and coastal flooding will be a possibility in the early hours of the day on the Potomac. Some of Thursday’s storms may be severe, producing high winds and heavy rains.

While the hurricane isn’t expected to hit the Northern Virginia area hard at the moment, the path and strength can change as it travels over the Atlantic. The storm began was a Category 1 hurricane Tuesday night, was upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane this morning, and could become a Category 4 storm by the end of today as it travels north.

As of now the region is expected to get hit with possible thunderstorms and rain throughout the weekend due to Hurricane Irene, with much of the rain coming between Friday night and Sunday. The hurricane will continue up the East Coast hitting portions of the Mid-Atlantic and will likely bring damaging winds, power outages and flooding to the Northeast between Saturday and Monday.

Between the storms, Friday should be mostly sunny though a scattered shower or two may be possible. By Monday we’ll see the sun again, but most of next week will be littered with isolated and scattered thunderstorms and showers.
