A harsh reminder that spring is technically still a few days away (it starts Wednesday), forecasters are predicting snow showers and sleet late Sunday night and Monday morning for Chantilly.

Temperatures will drop from about 40 degrees Sunday afternoon to 31 degrees by Monday morning, with a 30 to 60 percent chance of precipitation, according to The Weather Channel hourly forecast.

Precipitation should start as rain around 4 p.m. Sunday with temperatures in the upper 30s, but change to snow showers before dawn Monday. The combination of snow and sleet should end by noon on Monday as the precipitation changes back to rain.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Sunday and Monday for Northern Virginia and predicts accumulation will be less than an inch Sunday and Monday. The NWS forecast for Monday calls for “snow before 9 a.m., then snow and sleet likely between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., then rain, snow and sleet likely after 1 p.m. High near 41.”

The area may get just enough mixed precipitation to make driving a bit tricky for Monday morning’s commute.
