Tom Rust Remains Ahead After County's Canvass of Votes

The canvass netted each candidate only a handful of votes.

Late Wednesday morning, the Fairfax County Office of Elections refreshed its vote totals for the Nov. 5 election.

Following the canvass—which included both provisional ballots as well as a scrubbing of all absentee votes following Saturday's discovery that 3,200 absentee ballots had not been properly recorded on election day—Republican incumbent for Herndon's Delegate to the 86th District remains ahead of Democrat Jennifer Boysko.

Just before midnight on Nov. 5, when all 17 precincts in the 86th District reported their vote counts, Rust was ahead of Boysko by just 56 votes.

As of Wednesday morning Nov. 13, following Fairfax County's certification of local results, Rust is ahead by 54.

Specifically, Rust's vote count rose by six, and Boysko's rose by eight.

The new totals:

TOM RUST: 10,389 (50.01%)
JENNIFER BOYSKO: 10,335 (49.75%)

That still leaves the two candidates with only a 0.26 percent margin, which qualifies the election for a state-funded recount, if Boysko should choose to request one.

However, these totals are still not 100-percent final until the State Board of Elections performs its own canvass and certifies the results, which is due to happen by Nov. 25.
