We Are What We Eat, So What Are We?

The U.S. diet has changed enormously since the 1950’s. Today, the average supermarket sells about 45,000 items, about 70 percent of foods we eat are packaged and/or processed, and a growing percentage is imported.  In many ways U.S. food policy has failed to keep pace with the rapidly developing science and changes in the food industry.  Many scientists believe the food supply changes have been in part responsible for the tripling of the childhood obesity rates over the past three decades. Much needs to be done to address the chemical, biological, and nutritional problems with our food supply.

Erik D. Olson will be the presenter.  Erik has spent 30 years in the environmental world, first at EPA, then at the National Wildlife Federation and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and later as a senior Senate Environment Committee staffer. For five years he ran food programs at The Pew Charitable Trusts, and in December 2013 returned to NRDC to be Senior Strategic Director for Health and Food.
