Animals Attacked at Frying Pan Farm Park Near Herndon

Two goats, a calf and a chicken were cut and injured Saturday night, just one month after three horses were attacked on a nearby property.

A number of barnyard animals at were injured Saturday night by an unknown person at the Kidwell Barn in the Herndon area, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Two goats, a calf and a chicken were cut during the nighttime hours between 5 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday. About a month ago in the middle of the night on an adjacent property.

Staff of Frying Pan Farm Park discovered the injuries on the animals at about 8 a.m. when they went to feed them. The calf and one of the goats are both under one year old and are bottle-fed. The animals have no fear of humans and would approach anyone who comes close to them thinking they are going to be fed.

Animal control officers, detectives and private veterinarians responded to the scene and the investigation is continuing. The animals' injuries don't appear to be life threatening.

Police say they don't know whether the April 26 SPIRIT incident is related to the most recent animals attacks. The horses are housed in a barn that is adjacent to the park, but are not on park property. An arrest has not yet been made in that case and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about either incident who can recall seeing anything or anyone suspicious is asked to contact the Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131, or Crime Solvers anonymously at 1-866-411-8477. People can also visit www.FairfaxCrimeSolvers.org to submit tips.

Keep in mind, a person that hurts innocent animals is one step away from hurting humans. I was at the farm last weekend and saw some of the animals that were slashed. It was heartbreaking! The community is lucky to have this facility. Please keep your eyes and ears open to find the person that committed this crime.

Wow, really? Torturing animals for fun is the same as butchering an animal for food? Here is a thought, why don't you slice yourself up, better yet, have somebody you know mutilate you with whatever weapon was used to slice these defenseless animals up (seems fitting this way. After all these poor animals trusted the person(s) that did this to them), and when you are left there for hours defenseless, scared, bleeding in agonizing pain, we can walk up to you and ask you if you still feel the same way. The difference is that you are able to voice your opinion and these animals do not have a voice. We need to be their voice and stand up for what is right. I hope to God you don’t have and will never have any animals as you have no empathy. People who think like you, is what is wrong with our society these days. You should be ashamed of yourself and if you have children, I hope they never read your ignorant comment because they would be ashamed of you as well.

Donate, Donate, Donate. Frying Pan Farm is one of my boys' favorite places, and most of what is there has always been free. They love to go see all of the animals and sit atop the stationary tractors. We also go to the "put the animals to bed" event every year without fail. As others have said, we are very lucky to have an open farm in our backyards where our kids can play and learn. The horrible events of the last month really put a spotlight for our family on how important this resource is to us, and the necessary vet bills, security and surveillance in the aftermath can't be cheap. We donated yesterday, and you can too if the place means anything to you and you can spare the change. For us it was giving back to a place that has given us so much

I consider these two incidents to be hate crimes against the animals, and as such, believe the FBI--which prosecutes hate crimes--should get involved and be resourced. For two cents, I would sit in my car, camera ready, and await the perp. Can security cams be installed? Any humane society people out there who can help? Obviously, the sicko needs to be put away, where they can get help. So shocking; it makes me so sad.
