K9 Krawl Registration Open

There’s a sad connection between domestic violence and animal cruelty, and the desire to raise awareness of this led to the Fairfax County Police Department’s first K9 Krawl seven years ago.

The 2013 K-9 Krawl 5K is coming up Saturday, Oct. 19. The event is free. 

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and pets are not safe from domestic violence.

"Batterers often threaten, injure, maim, or kill their partners’ pets for the purpose of revenge or control within relationships," the Fairfax County Police Department reportedin a press release. 

“Unfortunately, many shelters do not have the means to house companion animals and many victims are left facing the difficult decision to either leave their pets behind or remain in the abusive environment,” according to Red Rover, a national animal crisis assistance and rescue organization.

The K9 Krawl is at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Fairfax County Government Center and starts in parking lot C.

However, participants are encouraged to check in by 8:30 a.m. to browse the vendor tables and watch the Fairfax County Police Department K9 unit demonstration at 8:45 a.m.
