Police Unveil Newest Traffic Safety Tool at Sully Police Station

Motorists will be soon be sharing the road with a new, unique-looking police cruiser on Fairfax County roadways. The 2013 Ford Taurus is equipped with all the essential instruments of other fleet vehicles, but looks quite different: It’s completely wrapped in public safety messages.

In partnership with Transurban and the Fairfax Law Enforcement Foundation, the cruiser is designed to increase public awareness about impaired driving and other traffic safety issues.    

Traffic data highlights the need to additional outreach public safety and enforcement measures. Over 13,500 drivers in Fairfax County were cited for failing to give full time and attention to driving in 2013. 

That is an increase from 12,434 in 2012. There were 2,827 drivers arrested for driving under the influence in Fairfax County in 2013 and 583 crashes in which alcohol was listed as a factor for at least one of the involved drivers. Texting while driving continue to be a concern, as well. There were 117 summonses issued for texting while operating a vehicle; up from 44 in 2012.
