What's That Loud Booming Sound in Lorton?

Quantico Marine Corps Base warns of explosive munitions operations taking place Thursday until 9 p.m.

Lorton residents reporting sounds of booming or windows rattling Thursday are likely feeling the explosive munitions operations from Quantico Marine Corps Base, which is headquartered 19 miles south of Lorton off of Interstate 95 in Quantico.

On Thursday, the Marine Corps Base tweeted from its Twitter account:

"Because we #LOVE you! Explosive munitions operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m today. Happy V Day! #quantico#trainingmarines"

Wow, my house has been shaking all morning. I live up on Silverbrook and South run, and the booming is still load.

What exactly is a range clearance operation, and what is the cost per unit?

Thanks. I'd been wondering why the house had been rattling all day.
