Explosive Victory for Chantilly Against the Saxons

Charger quarterback Sonny Romine tosses two touchdown passes in 24-8 win

Fresh off of an eight-point victory over powerhouse Stone Bridge, the Chantilly Chargers (3-0) traveled to Langley High School (2-1) to face the Saxons on Friday night. A packed crowd watched fifth-ranked Chantilly explode for 24 unanswered points en route to an 24-8 victory.

Perhaps hindered by the cool weather at kickoff, both teams’ offenses started slowly. But the rust wore off in the second quarter as the two scored a combined 15 points within the last three minutes of the first half. For nearly three quarters, Langley’s defense held the Charger offense at bay in what looked to be a potential upset.

Langley got on the scoreboard first with a one yard quarterback keeper by Austin Vasiliadis that capped a nearly 10-minute drive in which Langley running back Phillip Mun carried the ball seven times. Langley opted for a two-point conversion instead of the extra-point, which Mun successfully converted to give the Saxons an 8-0 lead.

Langley's long drive gave Chantilly with the ball with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half. Undeterred, the Chargers answered on just their second play. Quarterback Sonny Romine hit wide receiver Caleb Reinhardt for a 57-yard touchdown strike which silenced the home crowd and made the score 8-7 heading into halftime.

The Chargers received the ball first in the third quarter and quickly put three more points on the board. Kicker Billy Germain booted one in from 15 yards to make the score 10-8 in Chantilly’s favor.

Langley’s offense struggled to find a rhythm in the third quarter, which kept their defense on the field for a good amount of time. After completing two consecutive passes in the direction of Langley’s right cornerback, Romnie hit Nico Alcalde on a skinny post to the left side of the field for a 24-yard touchdown to make the score 17-8 with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Down by nine in the game’s final quarter, Langley cornerback Joey Robinson intercepted a Romine pass which gave the Saxons the ball at the Chantilly 45-yard line and a glimmer of hope for a comeback. But the Saxon offense was once again unsuccessful in moving the ball and turned it over on downs after Chantilly’s defense stuffed Vasiliadis in the backfield on fourth down.

Chantilly put one more touchdown on the board with just under three minutes remaining in the game when running back Will Hill-Pensamiento carried it in from 16 yards out. The extra-point conversion made the score 24-8.

Next Up: Chantilly travels to West Springfield (2-1) on Friday, September 23.
