Students who attend Fairfax County Public Schools rejoiced late Wednesday night when school officials announced their decision to cancel school Thursday for the third consecutive day.

Tuesday's winter storm brought plenty of snow and ice to the region and many areas of the county were still clearing roads and sidewalks the following day. On Wednesday, temperatures plunged well below freezing and are forecast to stay there until Saturday.

Although weather forecasts predicted mostly cold temperatures Thursday with a chance of snow showers, it appears school officials determined too many county roads and student walking routes were still unsafe for travel.

Not everyone was excited about the cancellation. Some parents and school employees took to Twitter and Facebook to question the decision.

"It's ridiculous," said one parent on Facebook. Another called the decision "short-sighted" and suggested the county should have delayed school rather than cancel it altogether. Arlington County and Alexandria started school Thursday with a two-hour delay; Loudoun County canceled school for the rest of the week.

Even the Capital Weather Gang thought Fairfax County Pubic Schools should "toughen up" and send students back to school.

Since Thursday marked the school district's sixth snow day, Feb. 17 (President's Day) and April 7 (a student holiday/teacher workday) are now makeup days.

Following Loudoun's decision, Stafford County Public Schools decided to cancel school Friday and make the day a teacher workday, but there's no word on what Fairfax County will do as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

I believe we should all rise before 6:30 and walk a mile and a half to school in 10-20 degree weather. We should not be wearing an LLBean, Eddie Bauer, Land's End or a North Face or a Columbia jacket.

I couldn't imagine a bus coming down our steep hill Thursday. It was still covered with ice (the whole road). They made a good call as far as our neighborhood was concerned. (although we are more rural than the rest of the county). Also, I think as far as the extreme cold: I see so many children who don't have proper clothes, just hoodies. I am not sure if it is economics? If the cold stayed for awhile, maybe these families would catch up and purchase what is needed, but I guess if it is a surprise cold, they just don't have the right coverage. Children's fault?

Seriously, it was very responsible to call off school for Thursday! The main roads were good but there are so many back roads and the cold etc made it dangerous for these kids! Parents who actually have the nerve to complain about the day off are ridiculous and goes to show how important their kids well being really is...sorry for inconveniencing you!!

C'mon people. YOU ARE THE REASON why the school closed. Not the kids, the parents. You think the County wants a law suit on their hands. NO. Better play it safe than sorry and not get sued. This is a money decision ... and to some degree a PR decision.
