Whiz Kids: Greenbriar East Elementary Filmmakers
Team of four students takes second place at 2011 Video Fairfax awards.

Accomplishment: These four young filmmakers placed second in the Grades 4-6 category of the 2011 Video Fairfax competition for their short film, Goyota.

Key to Awesomeness: Alexa, Nick, Angelique and Gina were among 100 students from 40 Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) who entered short films in this year’s Video Fairfax competition. The annual program has been produced by the Arts Council of Fairfax County since 1991 and is supported in part by Fairfax County, Cox Communications, and Fairfax Public Access. The competition welcomed student submissions from all grade levels in a number of categories, including commercials, documentaries and fictional pieces.
The Video Fairfax program’s mission is “to inspire K-12 students from Fairfax County Public Schools to learn film and new media skills through hands-on participation and a juried competition by industry experts,” Arts Council Director of Communications and Programs Henrik Sundqvist said in an email.

The Video Fairfax awards ceremony and reception was held in late May at Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church. The judges of this year’s competition were Lisa Clarke and Jerry Ferguson from Fairfax Public Access, Cindy Lont, Director and Film and Video Studies Program Professor at , and Birgit Buhleier, an independent filmmaker and wildlife researcher.
Mike Leone, the Director of Public Affairs at Cox Communications, presented awards at last month’s ceremony. “This is our eighth year partnering on the Video Fairfax competition,” he said, “and each year we are amazed by the quality of the work; it is clear that our local youth are creative, inspired, and know how to use technology to share their voice and tell the stories they want to tell.”
Finishing just behind a student’s video, Alexa, Nick, Angelique and Gina’s Goyota is a lighthearted parody of a car advertisement. Their video, along with those of the other 2011 Video Fairfax winners, may be viewed here.
Sundqvist encourages all creative FCPS students and aspiring filmmakers to participate in next year’s competition. Entries will be accepted Dec. 1, 2011 through April 1, 2012.
