Westfield High Weekly Sports Recap: Oct. 24-28

Varsity football team still undefeated while field hockey reaches regional semis.

Football team earns top seed in Regionals

Defense wins football games and Friday night proved that colloquialism as turnovers ended the battle of the unbeaten between the Wildcats (8-1) and Bulldogs (9-0) in a defensive match up for the ages. Westfield, with a rarely seen stymied offense, relied on its 11 men on the opposite side of the ball to cap off a 13-10 victory in overtime to keep the Bulldogs’ undefeated run alive.

Kicker Matt Delaney split the uprights from 19-yards out to win the game after Centreville failed to capitalize on its ensuing overtime possession. Westfield senior defensive back Tyrone Walker recovered a Wildcat fumble on Centreville’s drive to give Delaney the shot at the game-winner, which sent the 2011 undefeated Bulldog team to the Northern Regional playoffs with the No.1-seed.

But first, Westfield will have to regroup on offense before they face an angry Herndon Hornet team that is looking to pull off an upset next week. Kendell Anderson rushed for just 25 yards on the night, approximately one-tenth of his output during each of the past two games, while the stingy Wildcat secondary also limited Quentin Basil to 31 yards receiving.

Westfield will play at home against Herndon at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4.

Volleyball squad wins tearjerker in ‘bench-clearing celebration’

Tied at two sets apiece, Westfield’s (13-12) senior defensive specialist Alex Collier, who had been sidelined for the past month with a dislocated knee, entered the Oakton (12-12) match in the fifth and final set, knotted at 2-2. She leapt from the service line and racked up seven consecutive points to rally her team to 9-2 and an eventual 3-2 victory on Senior Night in her final home game.

Head Coach Kim Bour said he planned on sending Collier in for maybe two serves. Yet Collier powered through the pain and delivered what could be called the greatest highlight moment of the 2011 high school sports year. The bleachers cleared as the team and fans alike celebrated in tears of joy. The Bulldogs fell to Centreville (11-12) two days later in another tight match, but Westfield finished out the regular season above .500 for the first time since the team reached the state championship in 2008.

Field hockey team reaches regional semis

The Bulldogs (18-2) put on an offensive clinic Tuesday night, defeating West Potomac 4-0 in the first round of the regional tourney. Two days later they edged McLean 2-1 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis this Monday (10/31). Westfield has rattled off eight straight wins and looks to be the squad to beat in the Northern Region.
