Sully Historic Site in Chantilly is offering entertaining and educational morning camps for children in July and August.
Many technologies we rely on today were founded in earlier centuries. In the History of Science Camp, children ages 8 to 12 will find out about technology for weather prediction, cooking, clothing manufacture, and treatment of disease.
From Wednesday, August 6 through Friday, August 8, children will learn about 18th-century scientific tools that were used at Sully and even get to make their own barometer, weather vane, weather journal, and parachute. Participants will also get to churn ice cream and butter, cook in the 18th-century kitchen and brew medicinal tea.
Archaeology and architecture are the clues needed to decipher information about life in the past. In the Sully Sleuths Camp, children ages 6 to 11 will become detectives uncovering the secrets of life in the 18th century at Sully. Participants will cook in the open hearth kitchen to see why hot coals work better than a roaring fire and read primary source documents to discover the mystery of the historically interchangeable letters “I” and “J.” This workshop takes place Wednesday, August 20 through Friday, August 22, 2014.
Each camp is $90 for Fairfax County residents and $105 for out-of-county residents.
Sully Historic Site is the 1794 home of northern Virginia’s first congressman, Richard Bland Lee. Until 1811, Sully was home to the Lee family as well as over 30 enslaved laborers.
Sully is operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority as a historic house museum and includes extensive grounds and outbuildings. Sully Historic Site is located at 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, off Rt. 28 (Sully Road) ¼ mile north of Rt. 50 and 5 miles south of the Dulles Toll Road. Reservations are required and space is limited.
