Dulles Access Highway 'Backtrackers' Beware: New Enforcement Campaign Underway

MWAA and Virginia State Police will be watching for drivers illegally using the road.

Have you or someone you know ever just jumped on the Dulles Access Highway for a toll-free ride passing everyone stuck in rush hour? Well consider this your warning that authorities will be watching.

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police officers will make themselves be highly visible around Dulles International Airport with a particular eye toward enforcing the prohibition of vehicles on the Dulles Access Highway for non-airport business.

Illegal using the road for non-airport business is called “backtracking.” Punishment includes fines starting at $92 and points on the violator’s driver’s record.

Backtrackers avoid tolls on the Dulles Toll Road and place an unfair burden on law-abiding commuters, whose tolls pay for maintenance and improvements in the Dulles Corridor.

“Backtracking through Dulles is cheating and it is illegal,” said MWAA Police Chief Stephen L. Holl. “It’s not fair to those who play by the rules and stick to the Toll Road for commuting and local travel. Our ongoing efforts to curb this illegal practice will help ensure the Access Highway is used properly.”

The Dulles Access Highway – the lanes that run in both directions inside the Dulles Toll Road – was built exclusively for Dulles Airport traffic to and from Washington, DC.

Mobile electronic signs placed at key points around Dulles International Airport will advise drivers of the additional enforcement. Virginia State Police will assist in the campaign.
