Literacy Nonprofit Seeks Books from DC Community

Books for America Friday hosted one of its many book giveaways in D.C. and around the metro area.

Local nonprofit organization Books for America Friday hosted a book give-away for teachers at Smothers Elementary School in northeast Washington. 

Books for America awarded a grant of 1,000 age-appropriate reading books to the school for use in the classroom as well as some books for students to bring home.

The nonprofit, based near Dupont Circle, has donated 87,000 books to local schools, shelters, prisons and other organizations.

Books for America founder and CEO Stephen Hersey said his group is seeking books from the Georgetown community and elsewhere for both adults and children to help it keep filling empty bookshelves.
