VDOT recommends that drivers find alternate routes Saturday as workers install traffic lights.
Lanes on Route 50 will be closed in both directions beginning around 8 p.m. Friday night and continuing into Saturday, as workers install new traffic lights. The work will take place at the intersection of Route 50 and Lee Road. Drivers should expect delays Saturday. VDOT recommends taking alternate routes until the work is completed. From the VDOT website: Lane closures will be up in both the Eastbound and Westbound directions of Route 50 until completion. Also, police officers will be stopping traffic periodically so that the signal subcontractor can remove the permanent poles and install the new temporary signal poles and new span wire. Upon completion of this work, the new intersection will be fully operational and the traffic …

VDOT is discussing options to alleviate traffic at the intersection of Braddock and Pleasant Valley roads. Which do you prefer, a roundabout, traffic light, or something else? Vote in the Patch poll.
Eight years ago, a proposal for a roundabout at the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Braddock roads got scuttled after the project became too expensive. This week, Centreville and Chantilly-area residents were again discussing what to do about the intersection, where drivers are often backed up for 10 minutes or more. VDOT presented three options to alleviate the congestion: Some residents are concerned that a roundabout would make it difficult for drivers to get out of nearby neighborhoods, especially in the mornings, when traffic is heaviest. A light, however, has the disadvantage of treating all traffic the same, even at off-peak hours. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Read about …

The intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and Braddock Road has long been a problem area, and officials say it's time to do something about it.
During peak commuting hours, long lines of cars back up at the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Braddock roads, with drivers often waiting over 10 minutes for their turn at the stop sign. That situation just might change in the next few years. VDOT is considering plans to make some major changes at that intersection, which a large number of commuters from the South Riding area use. "The current four-way stop operates at level of service 'F'. Which is obviously failing," said Bill Cuttler, a representative of VDOT, to chuckles from a group of about three dozen residents at a meeting about the project in the Sully District Governmental Center Monday. Cuttler said that the proposals VDOT is considering would improve the traffic …

Some residents say that while the situation is bad, they're worried improvements will only move the problem to other areas.
Centreville and Chantilly area residents have known for years that the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Braddock roads is a problem for drivers, but some are concerned over the proposed solutions. VDOT is considering adding a roundabout or a stoplight at the four-way intersection. The intersection has long been a trouble spot: eight years ago an effort to put in a roundabout went nowhere after project costs rose significantly. About three dozen residents attended a meeting on the project in the Sully District Governmental Center Monday. Some said that they're worried the traffic will just get worse elsewhere if the situation at the intersection improves. "The roundabout scares the heck out of me," said Chris Terpak-Malm, a Pleasant …

Commuters who buy transponders in September 2012 could win two free weeks of travel in January.
Commuters who sign up for an E-ZPass transponder during September will be eligible for two weeks of free travel when the I-495 Express Lanes open later this year. All travelers who wish to use the express lanes when they open will need an E-ZPass or an E-ZPass Flex, said Pierce Coffee, marketing director at Transurban-Fluor, and the promotion is an incentive for new users to get their tags before the lanes are operational. "People are busy with their daily lives, so they wait until the last minute to get their E-ZPass, and then they might not be able to get it in time for [the lanes'] opening," she said. “So what we want to do is entice people to get their EZ-Pass before the road is open later this year so that they have it — it's in their…

The 2050 Countywide Transit Network Study seeks resident input on transportation options
Residents have one more chance to weigh in on the future of transportation in Fairfax County. The 2050 Countywide Transit Network Study, launched last month by the department of transportation to determine how public transit system expansion plans can best meet the county’s goals for long-term economic growth, will close to the public Aug. 10. "An objective of the study is to develop an inter-connected rapid transit system network that gets people where they need to go that connects with transit in Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun and Prince William [counties]," said Tom Burke, a senior transportation planner in the county’s DOT, at a public meeting in Fairfax last month. The 25-question online survey asks questions ranging from what makes…

Traffic projects designed to ease commuters’ congestion
There is an old joke that says Northern Virginia will someday be a really great place, once they get all the roads built. That is especially true for Centreville and Chantilly as crews launch projects this summer to ease traffic congestion. In an update on local construction, County Supervisor Michael Frey said the Sully District will see multiple projects over the next two years to obliterate long-standing roadway bottlenecks that are the bane of the daily commute. “We are going to see a lot of projects that will probably make it a bit easier to get around,” Frey said. “Some of them have been coming for years.” I-66/Route 28 Projects The county has been working on a number of projects to reduce congestion on local streets, Frey said. More service during peak hours opens more seats, space for riders.
Jamal Cooper had a seat on the train on his way home from work Tuesday evening for the first time in a while. Cooper, 28, of Arlington, believes the seat he sat in from Farragut West to Ballston along the Orange Line, was made available by Metro’s new RUSH+ program. The program, which started Monday, is expected to reduce crowding along the Green, Yellow, Blue and Orange lines. “I appreciate Metro adding more service along the line,” Cooper said. “This is something they should have done a while ago. This is going to make a lot of people happy." The program is expected to improve service for about 110,000 riders, with more than 46,000 of those customers along the Orange Line. According to Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation …
