Dominion Announces Thursday Work Locations

Fewer than 2,000 Dominion customers in Northern Virginia remained without power Thursday morning.

Dominion Virginia Power this morning released a list of where crews will be working to restore power Thursday. The list is attached to this article as a pdf (available in the media box to the right).  "Lists are based on early morning work plans for crews. However, needs often change during a major restoration and crews stay on the move. They may visit, leave and return to some locations, and may perform work at locations not shown on today's list," according to Dominion. The highest concentration of current outages are inside the Beltway, however many smaller outages exist across Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties and elsewhere. Dominion reported only about 1,700 customers without power in Northern Virginia as of Wednesday night…

I did snap a few more photos this morning, which I'll post later on (the ones currently up here are from Monday). Will Hurricane Sandy Cancel Halloween?

Storm will leave most of Virginia by Wednesday, but lingering power outages and debris could make trick-or-treating dangerous.

The rain and wind from Hurricane Sandy is expected to leave the DC metro area Wednesday morning, but it may be too late to save Halloween for thousands of local children. Hurricane Sandy is predicted to dump several inches of rain and bring strong, dangerous winds to the area through dawn Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Sterling predicts there will be a chance of lingering showers Wednesday during the day with high temperatures in the mid-50s. Wednesday night will be mostly cloudy with a low temperature of about 41 degrees. Even if the storm itself is mostly gone, the damage may linger. Gov. Bob McDonnell said Monday afternoon that cleaning up debris, downed trees and power lines could take days. Since Halloween is a community …

UPDATE: Hurricane Sandy: State Agencies, Police On Standby

Gov. Bob McDonnell reminded residents to prepare for power outages and cold weather in a telephone press conference Saturday afternoon. Dominion warns of prolonged outages.

(UPDATE 4:10 p.m.): Power outages for its customers could be "prolonged" in Northern Virginia due to outages from the coming storm, Dominion Virginia Power advised in a news release sent out Saturday afternoon. "This storm system will build in intensity over time and will remain a force for days, not just hours, causing major damage and extensive power outages," said Rodney Blevins, vice president of Distribution Operations, in a news release. "Its effects will be felt for days along much of the East Coast." Dominion noted that it will supplement its linemen and contractor tree trimmers with additional utility workers from other states.  "When customers lose their electric service during a major storm, their primary question is when their …

Verizon: 'We're Ready for Sandy'

Telecommunications company has spent months making improvements in hopes of avoiding another 911 system failure.

An estimated 2.3 million people lost access to 911 service this summer when the area was hit by a derecho. Now, with Hurricane Sandy lined up to potentially slam Northern Virginia, Verizon — the company that provides the emergency communication service — is confident that the long list of improvements it has made in the months since are enough to weather the storm. "We're ready for Sandy," Verizon spokesman Harry J. Mitchell told Patch in an interview Friday evening. In late September, Verizon released an 11-page Moving Forward presentation (see the PDF attached at the right) outlining the issues with its power system and internal and external communication that contributed to the 911 system failure — and the steps that have been or will …

In-Person Absentee Voting Open Saturday

Officials have suggestions for those who had planned to vote Monday or Tuesday as Hurricane Sandy approaches Northern Virginia.

With Hurricane Sandy approaching, voting may be a concern for those who are planning to vote absentee prior to Election Day, which is Nov. 6. "Safety is our paramount concern," said Merni Fitzgerald, director of Public Affairs for Fairfax County, in an e-mail to Patch. "Fairfax County is monitoring the weather and preparing for Hurricane Sandy," she said. "We’re asking the community to prepare as well. One way to prepare is to think ahead to eliminate travel during the upcoming storm when roads will be wet and slippery. "We are following the guidance of the State Board of Elections and also our own Fairfax County emergency and public safety officials," she noted. "If there are any changes to the operating status of the facilities serving …
