Greatest Generation Shares Stories With Rocky Run Students

Rocky Run Middle School held its annual World War II Oral History Day on Thursday.

Eighty-eight-year-old Jerry Wolf remembers a lot of things from his time in a German prisoner of war camp. How he existed on a starvation diet and lost somewhere between 30 and 50 pounds. The diarrhea and dystentary that ran rampant throughout the camp. How for months, he wasn't sure if his family knew if he was dead or alive.  "It's kind of hell to lay down in the cold, you're hungry, and you don't know if they know you're alive," Wolf, a Springfield resident, told a small group of seventh grade students listening with rapt attention Thursday.  Wolf was one of the over 100 veterans and civilians who converged on Rocky Run Middle School in Chantilly on Thursday to share their memories of life during World War II. Photo of the Day: WWII Day at Rocky Run

The students at Rocky Run Middle School invited veterans and others with memories of the Second World War to share their stories.

On Thursday, Rocky Run Middle School held its annual World War II Oral History Day, which is unofficially nicknamed "The Latest Generation Meets the Greatest Generation." Over 100 veterans and civilians with memories of the war visit the school every year, and share their experiences with the students. The students document the veterans' experiences as part of a special history class project. Check back on Friday for more coverage of World War II Day.
