McAuliffe, Cuccinelli Vie for Women's Vote in Virginia Governor's Race

Democrat picks up Planned Parenthood endorsement hours after speech bashing opponent on abortion.

Planned Parenthood endorsed Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe Thursday hours after the Democrat bashed opponent Ken Cuccinelli on the abortion issue. McAuliffe painted his Republican opponent Cuccinelli, Virginia's attorney general, as an ideologue Wednesday night at a campaign stop in Lorton. Specifically, McAuliffe focused on abortion.  "I'm running against a guy who has a social, ideological agenda," said McAuliffe of Cuccinelli. "He has said that it is his goal to see abortion disappear in the United States of America." The political arm of Planned Parenthood so far has donated a little more than $30,000 to McAuliffe's campaign in Web services, according to Virginia Public Access Project. It has a Web site …

Northern Virginia Democrats See Turnout As Key to 2013 Governor's Race

ABC News: About half as many Virginians vote in gubernatorial elections as in presidential years.

Anyone familiar with Terry McAuliffe knows he can tell a good story. The one he told Thursday in Arlington, at George Mason's campus as he was wrapping up a five-day tour of the state, was about this past November. It was Election Day. McAuliffe, at the request of the campaigns of Barack Obama and Tim Kaine, was asked to head to a polling station in Henrico County, where voters were still waiting in a long line as darkness fell. He said he went there and handed out coffee, hot chocolate and hand warmers. And everyone got to vote. And then he asked everyone in the room to mobilize for this year's election. [McAuliffe: Reform Virginia's Standards of Learning Tests] Turnout, often, is key. But now more than ever that isn't lost on Northern …

Cuccinelli, McAuliffe in Dead Heat, New Poll Says

Terry McAuliffe led with registered voters, but Cuccinelli led with likely voters, according to a new poll from Marist.

The race between Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and businessman Terry McAuliffe is neck-at-neck, according to a new poll released Wednesday. The NBC News/Marist poll shows McAuliffe (D) getting 43 percent support from registered voters, slightly ahead of Cuccinelli’s 41 percent (R). But McAuliffe, who will make a campaign stop in Arlington Thursday, trailed Cuccinelli among likely voters 42 percent to 45 percent. The NBC/Marist poll follows a Washington Post poll, published Saturday, that showed Cuccinelli with a slender 46 to 41 percent edge over McAuliffe among all Virginia voters and a significant 51 to 41 percent lead among those who say they’re certain to cast ballots in November. Together, the polls show an early fluid race…

Virginia's Presumptive Democratic Nominee for Governor, Terry McAuliffe, Delivers Signatures to Election Board

Northern Virginia resident, former DNC chair, delivers 35,746 signatures Wednesday to board in Richmond in gubernatorial bid.

Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe hand-delivered 35,746 signatures Wednesday to the Virginia State Board of Elections in Richmond to help secure his place on the ballot in the governor's race.  McAuliffe will face Republican Virginia State Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli on the ballot come November. A new poll out Wednesday showed Cuccinelli is viewed as "having better experience while voters see Terry McAuliffe as slightly less ideological, but neither is well-known to voters who are divided on who should be the next governor, with 40 percent for Republican Cuccinelli and 38 percent for Democrat McAuliffe," according to a news release about the new Quinnipiac University poll.  The most important issue in the …

Virginia's Next Governor: Ken Cuccinelli, Terry McAuliffe or... ?

Does the commonwealth need another name on the ballot?

Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling took himself out of Virginia's race for governor last week, leaving, at least for now, what's shaping up to be a two-person race.  The choice for the Old Dominion's next governor, seven months before Election Day, seems to have boiled down to presumptive Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli, the state's socially conservative attorney general, against likely Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a McLean businessman. The Republican Party of Virginia will hold its convention on May 17 and 18 in Richmond to formally select its nominee. Democrats go to the polls on June 11 to cast their ballots in several races, including governor and lieutenant governor. …

Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling Rules Out Run for Governor of Virginia

There was speculation that Bolling planned to run as independent.

Virginia Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling (R) announced Tuesday in an email to supporters that he has decided not to run for governor. Speculation had grown recently that Bolling might run as an independent in the race. That would have made it a three-way race between Bolling, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and former DNC chair Terry McAuliffe. Bolling decided not to go head to head with Cuccinelli after the Virginia Republican party decided it would choose its nominee in a state party convention rather than a primary. Cuccinelli, a social conservative, is popular among Virginia's conservative activists who are likely to attend the convention, the New York Times pointed out last fall when Bolling initially bowed out of the race. Bolling …

McAuliffe Praises Transportation Compromise, Blasts Cuccinelli in Arlington

Terry McAuliffe said he disagreed with parts of bill but thought supporting the compromise that passed the Senate on Saturday was crucial.

The former chairman of the Democratic National Committee came to Arlington Tuesday to praise the work of Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell. Terry McAuliffe, the Democrat hoping to succeed McDonnell, said he spent hours on the phone calling members of both parties urging them to support a transportation compromise, which ultimately passed this weekend in the hours before the 2013 General Assembly session ended. "When you work on these major projects, it's not about a partisan agenda," McAuliffe told about a half-dozen reporters at a news conference on the 15th floor of the Sheraton Pentagon City. "This was a big deal. Was this a legacy item for Governor McDonnell? You bet it was." The event was designed to paint Republican Attorney General Ken …

Former President Clinton to Headline Fundraiser for Terry McAuliffe in NYC

News reports say fundraiser for McAuliffe, Democrat running for governor in Virginia, is set for March 13.

Former President Bill Clinton will headline a fundraiser March 13 in New York for Terry McAuliffe, the former Democratic National Committee chair and electric car entrepreneur who is making a second run for governor of Virginia, according to a recent report by the New York Daily News. McAuliffe, 56, a resident of McLean, was defeated by state Sen. Creigh Deeds in the Democratic primary in 2009 in a previous run for the governor's seat. So far, McAuliffe faces Republican Ken Cuccinelli, 44, Virginia Attorney General, in the governor's race. There's a possibility that Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, 55, could still get into the race as an independent; he's told supporters to expect some sort of an announcement March 14. The election is in Nov. 5. …

Will Lt. Governor Bill Bolling Run for Governor as Independent?

Bolling tells dinner crowd to save March 14 for big announcement, AP reports.

Two Northern Virginia politicos running for governor could soon get some company.  Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, a Republican, told a dinner crowd Wednesday night in Richmond to save March 14 for a big announcement, the AP reports.  Bolling, currently serving his second term as lieutenant governor, decided to quit the Republican race after conservatives loyal to his intraparty rival, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, took a majority of seats on the state GOP's central committee and opted for a closed nominating convention instead of an open primary. "[Bolling] has been very successful in staking out positions that have gotten him a lot of attention this year," Stephen Farnsworth, a political science professor at the University of Mary …

Virginia Inaugural Ball: 'You Can't Help But Feel Optimistic'

No rest for the weary: Democrats gear up for tough 2013 state races.

An estimated 1,100 people attended the Virginia Inaugural Ball on Sunday at the Westin Arlington Gateway to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama — and gear up for key statewide elections in 2013. "Everybody is happy. Everybody is excited. It's a feel-good moment for everyone who worked on a campaign," Arlington County Democratic Chairman Mike Lieberman told Patch before speaking to the crowd. "The president is right to feel good about this weekend. You can't help but be optimistic. There's a lot of criticism of our government out there, and some of it is deserved. But there's also a lot of reason for optimism. And coming out of the last election, we see a lot of opportunities." [See photos from the Virginia Inaugural…
