UPDATE: Traffic Alert — All Lanes Now Open on I-66 Westbound After Crash

Accident tied up traffic during Thursday evening rush hour for those driving westbound on I-66.

UPDATE 6:05 p.m.:
All lanes on westbound I-66 are now open to traffic, according to Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination. Delays still remain; MATOC describes crash as a tractor-trailer crash.

UPDATE 6 p.m.:
VDOT reported at 5:31 p.m. Thursday that the traffic backup is approximately 12 miles on I-66 West at Sully Road due to an accident that took place at about 4:10 p.m.

UPDATE 5:20 p.m.:
At 4:10 p.m. Thursday, Virginia State Police were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Fairfax County. The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of I-66 just east of Exit 53/Centreville.

One person was flown to Fairfax Inova Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Two westbound lanes will be opened momentarily as crews at the scene are working to clear debris from the crash.

An accident has shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 66 at Sully Road, according to an alert from Fairfax Alerts.

The alert states: 

"All lanes are blocked with traffic getting by on the right shoulder. Motorists should avoid area if possible."

The alert was sent out Thursday at 5:10 p.m.
